A lot of kids (and more than a few adults) struggle with spelling. There are many reasons why that happens. If you are one of them, you are not alone! Weak spelling skills can be a big problem in school. See if you can identify with any of these descriptions.

MEMORY PROBLEMS

Some kids have a really hard time remembering words that they have learned — even if they study like crazy.

Difficulty forming letters in a consistent way, or keeping on the lines on the paper, is another pretty common problem.

FEAR OF MAKING MISTAKES

Many weak spellers become reluctant to write. They tend to stick to words that they know how to spell, so their writing ends up being too short and simple. It earns poor marks.

ENGLISH HAS RULES?????

English can be a difficult language at times. While MOST words have sensible spellings, there are still lots of words that are not spelled the way they sound — and there seem to be exceptions to every rule!

SOUNDS AND SEQUENCE

Some kids struggle to tell the difference between the sounds, or the order of sounds, in words.

Whether you face one of these problems with spelling, or your challenge is a little different, the good news is that people CAN really improve in this area. It takes TIME and COMMITMENT but there are lots of different kinds of help available.
